Annual Report 2011 CENTRO DE EDUCAÇÃO PARA SURDOS RIO BRANCO In 2011, the name of Escola para Crianças Surdas Rio Branco was changed to Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco as a way to express the extent of its actions to carry out projects of valuation of deaf culture and identity. The Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco once again was the stage of the Congresso Internacional de Educação para Surdos (International Conference on Education of the Deaf), fulfilling its mission to promote important exchanges among experts from several countries regarding the best educational practices for the deaf. The expertise of the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco branches out to all institutions maintained by the Fundação de Rotarianos de São Paulo, trying to carry out projects for the deaf community, valuing and disseminating bilingual education and improving national policies. Several activities were held with students, conducted by expert teachers, to show the importance of reading, art and drama classes, sports and leisure in communication of deaf children with the world around them. With regard to family, the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco emphasized the importance of union, interaction and cooperation between parents and school, promoting discussion of its educational proposal so as to listen to the family’s expectations and encourage them to take part in the process. The documentary “Sinais do Amor” (Signals of Love), awarded during the II Festival de Vídeo nas Escolas (II Video Festival in Schools), presents expressive statements on this relationship that seeks to ensure full development of deaf children in school, mission of this institution, created 34 years ago. 72
