Show of Works Traditionally, at the end of each semester, the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco puts on a Show of Works displaying the results of student discoveries and learnings in several areas. Productions explore several themes tied to deaf identity, notions of geography and math, as well as reading, writing, using art, video and computer resources. Students had the opportunity to present their works EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS Carnival The students at the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco celebrated Carnival with activities that involved researching the different types of Carnival parties held in Brazil and creating costumes and masks with plaster, which were used in the balls, organized by age groups. Carnival celebrations promoted integration and enjoyment Labor Day Labor Day was celebrated with a lecture by Leonardo Castilhos, a deaf art educator at the Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM). The lecture fit the school’s goal to promote meetings of students with deaf professionals, with the purpose of showing the different job opportunities for the deaf and people with physical challenges. In addition to detailing his job – support to deaf visitors –, the art educator talked about his work in the Grupo Corpo Sinalizante, which fights for closed-captions to be included in Brazilian movies, in order to facilitate comprehension by the deaf. Folklore Day Recreational activities commemorated Folklore Day, with each class selecting traditional Brazilian games and presenting them to the other classes, then recording this in photos, drawings and texts that were put up on the school’s mural, showing how students fully adhered to the project, which aimed to provide knowledge on popular traditional ways of having fun. Students participated in folkloric recreational activities to celebrate Spring Games stimulated the students integration Spring Games The 2011 Pre-School Games and Spring Games joined students from the Colégio Rio Branco and from the Centro de Educação para Surdos Rio Branco to fraternize through the practice of several sports. The day’s activities included 50 and 100 meter races, ball throwing and tug-of-war, showing the students effort and great enthusiasm by the fans. 75
