Escola para Crianças Surdas Rio Branco at the Rotary Club de São Paulo The director of the escola para crianças surdas rio branco spoke to the members of the Rotary Club de São Paulo about the institution’s work. Sabine Vergamini asserted that society is not yet ready for deaf people. She also highlighted the school’s actions whose objectives are to socially integrate the deaf by using Libras (Brazil Sign Language) and the participation of the deaf and the hearing at diverse events. In addition, she spoke of the Development Program for children aged 0 to 3, which is characterized by a space that reproduces a visually signaled 45 m2 house. Sabine Vergamini with Jorge Roberto Corrêa Zantut National Early Childhood Network The escola para crianças surdas rio branco is now part of the National Network for Early Childhood (RNPI), which is comprised by a group of organizations from the civil society, government and private sector, who are united to act in favor of the early childhood rights. As a pioneer institution in the education of deaf children, the school will take its contributions to the group whose mission is to improve and integrate national policies, focusing on children up to 6 years old; to consolidate and disseminate knowledge and information about the themes of that age group; and to organize and mobilize social and political actions, focusing on the defense and promotion of their rights. HIGHLIGHT 2nd WFDYS Youth Camp in Venezuela The students of the escola para crianças surdas rio branco, Daniel Leme da Silva and Thaís Formagio, were internally elected and chosen to represent the school and Brazil in the 2nd WFDYS Youth Camp (World Federation of the Deaf Youth Section) 2010, which took place in the Margarita Island in Venezuela. The meeting - whose main purpose is the development of leaders capable of fighting, in the future, for the rights of the deaf minority – gathered children from 10 to 12 years old from different parts of the world, such as Daniel Leme da Silva, teacher Claudia Akemi Nagura Congo, Finland, Slovakia and Sweden. and Thaís Formagio PROJECT “Signs of Love” Video Parents to deaf children were invited to film a video to show and share stories about their family experiences. The video called “Sinais do Amor” (Signs of Love) brings families’ accounts of the journey and the discovery of deafness, as well as facing of prejudice. The video’s high point was the access to the escola para crianças surdas rio branco and Libras (Brazil Sign Language). Provided to all parents, the video is available on the school’s website.
